Installing Toontown
Installing Toontown
This guide shows you how to install Toontown and run it for the first time. When you're done with this guide, you should:
Compatibility Checking
The first thing you should do before signing up is to make sure your computer is compatible with Toontown. Quoting Disney's website, Disney recommends a computer with the following specifications as a minimum:
Toontown does not 'run' on Linux at the moment. Windows 95 and older is not compatible with Toontown.
The Toontown installer will check to make sure your PC meets the requirements automatically, so you don't really have to worry about that. However, if you must get the information manually, if running a PC, click on the start button, and choose "Run". Type in "DXDiag" and press 'Enter'. You should be able to get your processor speed, memory amount, video card type and memory, and other fancy stuff.
To find out how much free space your hard disk has and what version of Internet Explorer you're running, however, you'll need to take a different route. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click on System Information. You should be able to take note of your Internet Explorer version and free disk space there.
Installing Toontown (Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP)
Okay, now we're ready to install Toontown into the PC. Log on as a power user if you're on 2000/XP, fire up Internet Explorer, and head over to http://play.toontown.com . Click on the big red "Play" button, and you'll be shown some Terms of Agreement. You should read most of it, or ask a parent for help. Afterwards, click "I Agree", and in the next window, click "Next". You'll be asked to download a plug-in to test the system. Click "Yes", and your system will be tested. Note that while the test is going on, your PC's screen might flicker and/or the PC might appear to freeze up. If it does freeze up, don't panic! It's normal, and the PC should unfreeze shortly. Once the PC regains it's sanity, you'll be brought to a page asking you to create your account. Fill in the fields, and click "Next". You'll then be asked for an E-Mail address and an E-Mail Confirmation. Enter your e-mail address into both fields. You may uncheck the little check box at the bottom if you do not wish to receive any "Sellbot" e-mail from Disney. Click next, and click on the red "Free Trial" button to proceed. You'll be prompted to download another ActiveX plug-in. Click "yes", and this plug-in will install Toontown onto your PC. The installation will take anywhere from 5 minutes to a few hours, but you don't need to wait for the whole game to finish downloading before you can play. You should be able to get started once a window pops up and you see 6 empty boxes. Now, the real fun begins.
Installing Toontown (Vista)
Want to play Toontown on Windows Vista? You can't use the normal "Play" button and jump right into the game, like the procedure above. Toontown isn't designed for Vista yet, so you will have to do a few things before begining your Toon experience.
If you are a young toon, you may want to get your parent's help on this one!
The following settings may put your computer at risk from unknown and unsafe sites, only if you choose to visit them. Although, this seems to be the only way to have Toontown on a Vista-ran computer. Always proceed with caution!
In regards to that, you may see a few messages, such as "The current security settings may put your computer at risk", or something of the like. Ignore them if you wish to continue.
Assuming you have created an account already (If you haven't, see above!), we need to change a few options. Open Internet Explorer. In the top-right corner (At default), click "Tools". A window appears: Click the "Security" tab (At the top of the window). There, you'll find a checkbox labeled "Enable protected mode" (Under "Internet"). Un-check that. Click on "Trusted sites", or the green Checkmark. Click on the "Sites" button. Another window appears. In this window, find a checkbox labeled "Require server verifictation (Https) for all sites in this zone". Un-check that box. In the type-box, type in "toontown.com" and hit "Add". Now close that window, back to the security tab window. Click on "Custom Level" (Under Trusted Sites). Scroll down and look for "Auto Prompting for Active X controls", and select the circle "Enable" under that. Scroll down some more, and look for "Auto Prompting for File Downloads". Select the circle "Enable" under that, too.
Now, close everything, making sure to save all your settings, until you're back on Internet Explorer. Click the "Play" button on the Toontown website. It will ask you to install the Active X controls. Follow through all the steps. Before logging in, open a new Internet explorer (Or, a new tab). Type in the following website:
http://a.download.toontown.com/VERSION/InstallLauncher.exe
Where it says VERSION, type in the current version of toontown. You can find this in the release notes. An example of a good link would be...
http://a.download.toontown.com/sv1.0.24.24/InstallLauncher.exe
But it MUST be the latest version of toontown! Or else, this will not work! (Do not use these links - These are OLD, most likely)
It will ask to save a file. Do not Run, do not Cancel, but Save this file in a location you will remember (You will only need this file once), such as the desktop. After it is done downloading, run this file on your computer. After it goes through a proccess of "Installing" toontown, go back to Toontown.com. Their may not be a prompt of when the installation is done, except the window will close by itself.
Go back to Toontown's home page, click play, Log in, and Toontown should now work on your computer.
You may now play Toontown on Vista! Assuming you dont change these options, you will not have to go through this process any longer. Just go through the normal "Play" routine on the front page of Toontown like any other computer. You may delete the file you downloaded earlier.
