What is a Gag?

A gag is used to fight cogs in Toontown. Cogs cannot laugh or they will malfunction, so gags are used to make them laugh, defeating them.

Information about Gags

NOTE: See Pros and Cons of Gags for tips and tricks on the gags.

When two or more toons work together in battle, gags always work in the order they appear in your shticker book (top to bottom) as indicated below (Toonup, Trap, Lure, etc.). When using two or more of the same gag attack in the same round, there is a +20% damage bonus. In street battles, you get X points per level X gag used successfully against any level X or higher cog (or against any cog, as long as at least one level X+ cog is part of the cog group in front of you). For example, using a level 4 gag on a level 3 cog gets you zero points, unless a level 4+ cog is also present in that turn of battle.

In a building, while following the rule above, the multiplication is as follows:

Floor Multiplication of Gag Skill
1 1x
2 1.5x
3 2x
4 2.5x
5 3x

It is highly recommended that you use higher gags as you progress to higher floors (save your best for the last and maybe next-to-last floors) to maximize your gag points. In a building, you only get points after completing the entire building, so have a full gag bag. Invasions give a 2x bonus to these rules. A level 6 gag successfully used on the 5th floor of a building gives 6 (gag) x 3 (5th floor multiplier) x 2 (invasion bonus) = 36 points for one use! At all times, a maximum of 200 points per gag can be obtained in one building.

Key

  • DP#-# = Damage Point range
  • O/DP#-# = Damage Point range while Organic
  • H#-# = Healing range (for Toon-Up gags)
  • O/H#-# = Healing range while Organic (for Toon-Up gags)

Toon-Up

  • The Toon-Up gag is first available for you during Toontown Central, but don't fret if you don't pick it, you'll have another chance to get it later. The Toon-Up gags allow you to heal other Toons!
  • Toon-Up is critical to survival in buildings and large street battles.
  • The lowest level Toon-Up occurs first.
  • Among those using the same level of Toon-Up, the first person in the battle/elevator (the rightmost toon when selecting gags) will go first.
  • Toon-Up can fail (earn no points for that attempt) and will be indicated by the toon laughing only one time (‘ha’ or ‘heh’).
  • You will not earn points by using Toon-Up on an uninjured toon.

Expert Tips

  • Whether a successful Toon-Up will give Gag Experience depends on the level of the Cogs in the battle. If the highest level Cog is level 5, a successful Juggling Balls will not give Gag Experience, but Pixie Dust and lower will.
  • A Toon-Up must restore SOME Laff to give Gag Experience. Doing Toon-Up on a Toon with full Laff will not give experience.
  • A Laugh sound (Ha-ha! HO-HO-HO!) shows the Toon-up has hit. A bored sound (hmmm.) shows the Toon-up has missed.
  • There is a bug when you use Juggling Balls that after you heal with them if the team is very damaged, it will appear like your Juggling Balls worked to heal full, but then the turn after some Laff points get subracted. You are not losing any Laff points, the Juggling Balls first heal to full, then the turn after they subtract the amount that the Juggling Balls currently cannot heal. Even a maxed Juggling Balls cannot completely heal a full 100+ squad of Toons!
  • Many toons would reccomend that you take Toon-Up if you have the choice to, it is one of the most useful gags, for it is the only one that can heal other Toons.

Trap

  • Trap is a gag that depends on Lure to hit. If you lure a cog onto a Trap, there is no way that the Trap will miss. Setting a Trap gag will also increase the chance that the Lure will hit. Trap is first offered in Minnie's Melodyland.
  • Trap requires Lure to activate (and get points).
  • Two traps used on the same cog will destroy each other (the traps, not the cog) as soon as they are laid.
  • A maxed level 6 trap can kill all cogs through level 11.
  • Trap is 100% successful with a successful Lure.

Expert Tips

See Expert Tips for Lure.

Lure

  • Lure Gags are used to hold Cogs in a non-attacking position, where you can knock-them back for 50% more damage! Lure is also used to activate Trap. It is first available in Donald's Dock.
  • NOTE: Lured cogs do not attack the toons while lured.
  • Lure is critical to solo survival in all but the easiest buildings and for group survival in the toughest of buildings.
  • Lures last 1-4 rounds depending on level of lure used.
  • More than one toon may use lure and still get credit for the use.
  • The animation of the lure matches the highest level of lure used.
  • There is a +50% damage bonus from the first attack on a lured cog. The combo bonus of +20% still applies, if applicable. Two maxed cream pies (40 + 40 = 80), therefore, will do 80 + 16 (20% combo bonus) + 40 (50% lure bonus) = 136 damage to a lured cog (which kills a level 10 cog).
  • Using a lower lure with a bigger lure lowers the chance of success (compared to the bigger lure by itself).
  • Level 1 lure seems best for level 1-3 cogs, level 2 for groups of level 5 cogs or less, level 3 for up to level 7 cogs, level 4 for groups of level 10 or less, level 5 for any cog and level 6 for any group of cogs.
  • A toon more than halfway to their next level lure seems to have much better success rate with their highest level of lure.
  • Injured cogs and cogs with traps in front of them seem easier to lure.
  • At least one of the lured cogs must be attacked to get credit for the lure.

Expert Tips

  • The number of rounds that a cog will stay lured is not exact. Sometimes a cog will stay lured for more rounds than specified here, usually with a high-level Lure against a low-level cog, and sometimes a cog will come un-lured sooner than specified, usually a low-level Lure against a higher-level cog.
  • The chance to hit for Lure is partly determined by the relative levels of the Cog and the Lure. A $5 Bill has a better chance to hit a level 3 Cog than a level 9 Cog.
  • The chance to hit when using multiple Lures averages, for Lures of the same type. $1, $5, and $10 will average. Small Magnet, Big Magnet, and Hypno-goggles will average. NOTE: It is possible that Hypno-Goggles do NOT average in with the Magnets.
  • The chance to hit for Lure is increased if the cogs have been Trapped. An excellent tactic when confronted with a group of Cogs is to Trap one (possibly a cog that will be killed by the Trap), and lure the group of Cogs with Magnet or Goggles. This works great when duo-ing buildings with a Trapper.
  • While Lured, cogs will not attack. Drop cannot hit a Lured cog. You cannot set a Trap for a cog if it is already Lured. Throw and Squirt have a 100% Chance to hit a Lured Cog. If ALL cogs in a group are Lured, Sound will have a 100% chance to hit. If ANY Cog in a group is not Lured, Sound can miss.
  • Throw and Squirt will give bonus damage when used against a Lured Cog. The bonus is 50% of the basic Gag Damage. The damage is rounded DOWN. A Whole Cream Pie giving 37 points basic damage, will give 18 points bonus damage, NOT 18.5 (Total = 55 points damage, not enough to kill a level 6 Cog). At 38 damage, the Cream Pie gives 19 points bonus damage for a total of 57 damage, enough to kill a level 6 Cog.
  • If a Railroad is placed while Cogs are lured, any lured Cogs will unlure prior to the placement of the Railroad, so it is important that a multi-Cog lure be used if a Railroad is selected.

Sound

  • Sound is a very powerful gag when used in tandem with other Sounders. It does damage to all cogs, but unfortunately, it also unlures lured cogs. You can first obtain it in Toontown Central.
  • Sound is best to use only when the use of sound will kill at least one cog.
  • Sound destroys lures (the group will be attacked by the remaining cogs next round).
  • You do not get a Lure damage bonus when the cogs are hit with sound.
  • Four maxed foghorns can kill four level 12 cogs. At current calculations, and with the combo bonus, four maxed foghorns can kill four level 14 cogs (which do not yet exist)!
  • While soloing, using Sound and Lure alternately on the last cog each floor is a good way to build both gags.
  • Although it is rare, sound can fail when all the cogs are lured!

Expert Tips

  • Sound damage will increase with Gag Experience.
  • A 4-man attack all using maxed Foghorn WILL kill almost anything.
  • Using Sound on a Lured Cog is a good way to make yourself unpopular, fast.

Throw

  • Throw is a very powerful attack gag with slightly low accuracy. Your Toons start out with it.
  • Do NOT accept a task to visit Tom Tom’s Drums in Minnie's Melodyland unless you have or nearly have a Whole Cream Pie (level 5). A part of this task requires it.
  • You will begin with Throw, whether you like it or not. You can not get rid of it later.
  • Throw is 100% successful on a lone-targeted lured cog. In rare cases, an unlured cog targeted with another throw will dodge the attack, shifting the line of cogs, and causing the lured cog to get missed. It is also rare, but possible, for the dodging cog to get hit by a different attack!

Squirt

  • Squirt is the more accurate, but less powerful of your starting gags.
  • The chance of hitting a cog with Squirt is slightly better than with Throw, but it is recommended that you attempt to progress evenly among the two.
  • Squirt is 100% successful on a lone-targeted lured cog. In rare cases, an unlured cog targeted with another squirt will dodge the attack, shifting the line of cogs, and causing the lured cog to get missed. It is also rare, but possible, for the dodging cog to get hit by a different attack!
  • You will begin with Squirt whether you like it or not. You cannot get rid of it.

Drop

  • Drop has a very low accuracy, but it is very powerful! You can first get Drop in Donald's Dock.
  • Drop is the only attack gag that will always miss a lured cog.
  • Drop works far better when the cog is "stunned" (animation shows the cog "seeing stars").
  • Throw, Sound, and Squirt are adequate to stun a cog.
  • A trapped cog shows no stun animation. However, Trap is very effective for stunning cogs.
  • A maxed level 6 drop gag can kill all cogs through level 11.

NOTE: Drop is never guaranteed—even after stunning the cogs.

Expert Tips

  • Only Level 6 Drop damage (Grand Piano) will increase with Gag Experience.
  • If the target cog is "Stunned" by another attack in the same round, the chance that Drop will hit will be better. Squirt is often used to "Set up" Drop because of it's own high accuracy.
  • NOTE: Drop gags will ALWAYS miss on Lured cogs.
