This island at Disneyland was recently ransacked by pirates! What was the island's original name and when did it first open?

Answer: Tom Sawyer Island opened in 1956.

Tom Sawyer Island opened one year after Disneyland. Other names considered for the island were Mickey Mouse Island and Treasure Island. In the end, the name Tom Sawyer Island was used to go along with the Frontierland theme.

The island was re-themed as Pirate's Lair on Tom Sawyer Island to coincide with the release of the third installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy.

Did you know: The three wooden rafts used to transport guest to and from Tom Sawyer Island are named after characters from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer – Tom Sawyer, Injun Joe, and Becky Thatcher.
